    About this paper

    Knitting graph paper

Knit stitches are wider than they are tall, so a motif charted on square graph paper comes out squashed when you knit it. Knitter’s graph paper uses rectangular cells instead, here 1.3 times as wide as they are tall, with a bold line every 10 stitches and rows.

To match your own gauge, divide rows per 10 cm (or 4 in) by stitches per 10 cm and use the result as the width ÷ height ratio. For example, 22 stitches and 30 rows gives about 1.36.

    Frequently asked questions

Why not use square graph paper for knitting?

Most fabrics have more rows than stitches per inch, so each stitch is wider than tall. A circle charted on square paper comes out wide and flat once knitted. Matching the cell ratio to your gauge fixes that.

How do I make sure the grid prints at the right size?

In the print dialog choose “Actual size”, “100%” or “No scaling”, and turn off “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”. To confirm, print our free calibration test sheet and measure the 10 cm line with a ruler.

Is it free for commercial use?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no download limit. You can use the paper for classes, worksheets, products and client work.
